Elvis passed away last year, which makes drawing him even more special to me. There is feeling when you draw that all the time and heart you put into it is somehow immortalizing the subject. I know I feel that way about Bubba. I couldn't let him go. Telling his story through a book keeps him alive to me. And that helps to comfort me a little.
I desperately want a bulldog, but am not in a position to right now. So I live vicariously through other people's pictures online. It really makes me happy to have bulldogs that I follow on twitter. Now, starting to draw bulldogs is especially meaningful to me because I feel like I get to know that dog for a few hours.
I'm looking forward to getting to draw a new friend each month. I was lucky that this was a beautiful photograph of Elvis to begin with, which translated to a beautiful drawing. Every month, I'll be accepting photos through twitter or facebook and drawing a winner to paint with watercolor. If I can't choose just one (like this month), then I may do a sketch also.
